Coupon Organization

In the past couple of weeks I've had several new couponers asking for advice and tips on saving with coupons. I have 2 pieces of advice I always pass on:

1. Start slowly and don't be disappointed if you don't save tons of money the first few weeks. It takes time to build up your coupon "collection" and get to know when to use each coupon. Starting out it's easy to get carried away and buy things at regular price because you got a coupon for it this week. Hold on to those coupons and try to use each one when the product goes on sale. That way you get double savings.

2. The second piece of advice is start out organized and try to stay organized. All those little pieces of paper can get overwhelming if you just toss them in a basket on the counter or drop them in the bottom of your diaper bag.

Find a method of organizing coupons that works for you. Start small - use one of the little accordion style organizers that will fit in your purse or recyle your junk mail envelopes by labeling them with a few major categories like Baking, Dairy, Meat, Canned Goods, etc. Set a time each week when you can go through your inserts and clip the coupons you think you will use. File them right away then mark the date on the front of the insert with the remaining coupons find a place to file it. Never throw away coupon inserts until every coupon is expired or you could miss some fantastic deals.

You don't have to go out and buy a file cabinet. Start with something you already have - empty cereal boxes are great for storing coupon inserts. You can use a marker to put the dates on the side panel and keep the box in your pantry with the other cereal boxes. When you hear about a deal that you haven't clipped the coupon for - go to your "file" and get it.

Skintimate Shave Cream

Tone Body Wash
Buy for $3.99 - Get a $3 Register Reward
Free if you print this $1 coupon and use it.
If you still have the coupon for "up to $30 off a Bayer Contour or Breeze2
glucose monitor" you can make profit $10 in Register Rewards. Monitors are on sale for $19.99 and give back a $10 RR.
* Register Rewards are coupons that print out at the register and can be used on your next purchase of different items. For instance, you can't use the RR you received on the Colgate Toothbrush to buy the same item or your RR will not print. More details on how this all works HERE.
